Experts say that people with disabilities in Nepal require special care and attention during the COVID-19 pandemic. A lack of adequate facilities makes them vulnerable to the virus, according to this article.

Persons with disabilities in Nepal are adversely affected by this COVID-19 pandemic and their lives have been put at risk due to the abrupt and unsystematic nationwide lockdown by the Nepal Government. Persons with disabilities are not a homogenous group and, therefore, their needs or requirements differ based on their individual identity and condition. However, the Nepal Government’s blanket approach to address the needs or requirements of people in such humanitarian crises always seems ignorant of these facts. More about these facts can be found in this current study.

Approximately 46% of people with disabilities think that the awareness materials and information disseminated on COVID-19 are very less accessible for them and 15% think that they are completely inaccessible for them. 69% among the people with disabilities who think that the awareness materials are inaccessible or less accessible for them represent the category of ‘complete disability’ and ‘severe disability’. We have gathered this data from a recent assessment done by the National Federation of the Disabled- Nepal.

Aim of the COVID Response Strategies

The aim of the strategy is to prevent COVID-19 and overturn the tendency in COVID-19 spread among the disability community in Nepal.

COVID Response Strategies

CIL-Kathmandu’s approach is guided by the International Disability Alliance Key Recommendations toward a Disability-Inclusive COVID19 Response, World Disability Union COVID-19 Protocol, and theory of change to focus all over Nepal. The strategies will be implemented in the following steps-

CIL-Kathmandu will carry out a rapid assessment of the actual situations of persons with disabilities through its 77 district networks,
CIL-Kathmandu supports to the all age groups and victim of COVID 19, especially, severe and profound persons with disabilities,
Virtual counseling series on COVID-19,
Personal protective equipment (PPE) distribution,
Personal Hygiene Kit (Hand sanitizer, Masks, Gloves) distribution
Assistive/medical aid support (Diaper, Condom/Folic Catheter, Urine bag, Jelly, CIC Pipe, etc.) distribution.
Food and cash distribution to COVID-ridden persons with disabilities and their families.

CIL-Kathmandu’s Role

CIL-Kathmandu’s role will be to lead the strategic actions in responding to the COVID 19 in Centre. Moreover, it will carry out coordination among the Government of Nepal, International Partners, Private Sector, and Private donors regarding channelizing the response supports.

Where, CIL-Kathmandu will circulate among CIL networks carrying out needful actions in their respective districts by coordinating district administration office, local levels, support group, and other stakeholders.
